Get involved in '09!

Thank you for helping our GOP ticket in 2008! It's time to get ready for this year's important contests. With your active support, we can restore two-party representation in city government, and elect a Republican governor.

Three elections will be held in Alexandria during 2009:

We invite you to get involved with the '09 campaigns in Alexandria! Several things you can do:

  • Volunteer: Contact the local and state campaign(s) of your choice (see web links). And sign up with the City GOP to help all of our candidates in the '09 elections.
  • Help to nominate: Vote in the citywide canvass on Feb. 7. Sign up for the GOP State Convention by Jan. 23; then attend the Convention on May 30.
  • Stay informed: Follow the news about statewide campaigns and local campaigns.
  • Vote: Be sure to vote in the Special Election (Jan. 13), the City Election (May 5), and the Fall Election (Nov. 3).

Don't miss the deadline!

Republican nominees for statewide office will be chosen by the GOP State Convention, to be held May 30, 2009, in Richmond. Any registered voter in the City, who believes in the principles of the Republican Party, may sign up to be an Alexandria delegate to the Convention. We encourage all interested Republicans to participate.

IMPORTANT: You must sign up in advance, in order to be a voting delegate at the Convention. The filing form is available for download (see box), or you may ask us to send one to you (see contact info). Be sure to sign the form, and submit it to ARCC promptly (see mail and delivery information). The filing deadline is Fri., Jan. 23. Forms MUST be postmarked by that date, or hand-delivered by 7 pm. Late forms WILL NOT be accepted.

NOTES: There are many positions available (Alexandria may send up to 565 delegates). If a larger number sign up, the selections will be made at the city GOP canvass on Feb. 7. Also, the state party requests a filing fee of $35 for convention delegates, and ARCC requests a fee of $15, but those are voluntary.

For Governor of Virginia

McDonnell photoAttorney General Bob McDonnell is running for Governor in 2009. He is unopposed for the nomination.

McDonnell logoBob is a native of Northern Virginia (Fairfax County). He served in the House of Delegates from Virginia Beach for 10 years, prior to his election to statewide office in 2005. He has broad support throughout the Commonwealth, and we look forward to supporting his campaign in Alexandria.

For Lt. Governor of Virginia

This nomination is contested, with two Republicans seeking the position:
Bolling photoLt. Gov. Bill Bolling of Hanover County is running for re-election. He and McDonnell are running together.

Bill served as state senator from central Virginia. He was elected Lieutenant Governor in 2005, and has been a consistent voice for fiscal responsibility.

Muldoon photoPatrick Muldoon of Giles County is also running for Lt. Governor in 2009.

Patrick is an intellectual property lawyer and cattle rancher from southwest Virginia. He has served in several party positions, and was the GOP nominee for Congress in 1996 in the 9th District.

For Attorney General of Virginia

This nomination is contested, with three Republicans seeking to succeed Bob McDonnell:

For State Delegate

Alexandria voters will elect three members of the House of Delegates in November 2009:

  • 45th District (Much of eastern and central Alexandria, plus parts of Arlington and Fairfax Co.)
    Incumbent: David Englin (D)

    This seat is currently vacant. A special election will be held on Jan. 13, 2009.

For constitutional offices

Alexandria voters will elect these two constitutional officers for the City in November 2009:

  • Commonwealth's Attorney
    Incumbent: Randy Sengel (D)
  • Sheriff
    Incumbent: Dana Lawhorne (D)

City Republicans will nominate candidates for these two offices in May or June. Prospective candidates are invited to contact us.
