FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 20, 2012, Alexandria, VA – The Alexandria League of Women Voters will hold Mayoral and City Council Candidates’ Forums on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at 7:00pm, in the auditorium of George Washington Middle School, 1005 Mount Vernon Avenue. The North Old Town Independent Citizens Civic Association (NOTICe)., Northridge Citizens’ Association, Old Dominion Boat Club, and the Rosemont Citizens Association. There will be a separate forum for the two Mayoral candidates. Immediately following, the 12 candidates competing for 6 City Council seats will participate in a forum. The election will be held on Tuesday, November 6th.
Candidates will field questions about critical issues confronting Alexandria, such as eminent domain, transportation, land use planning, development, citizen participation, taxes, open space, and city spending. The public will have an opportunity to submit questions to the candidates.
For many years the local Alexandria election was held in May. In 2009, City Council moved the election to November. This year’s Mayoral and City Council election coincides with the Presidential election. With so much attention on the Presidential race, there has been little attention directed at these important local races. Alexandrians are urged to attend this candidates’ forum to learn the views of the candidates. Those who are elected will be making decisions that directly affect our community for the next three years.
