ARCC Resolution Political signs and land covenants

WHEREAS, political speech is essential to our republican form of government; and

WHEREAS, infringement on such speech form part of the grievances the founding fathers cited in the Declaration of Independence; and

WHEREAS, the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States protects freedom of speech from encroachment by government;

WHEREAS, the Virginia Declaration of Rights set out this important freedom and it forms an important part of our heritage as Virginians; and

WHEREAS, land covenants in any form, including condominium declarations, property owners’ association declarations, and deed restrictions, should not preclude the exercise of political speech by landowners;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Alexandria Republican City Committee respectfully requests that the General Assembly of Virginia amend title 55 of the Code of Virginia to protect the political speech rights of landowners.
