Real property taxes
in Alexandria

WHEREAS, the Republican Party stands firmly for lower taxes and fiscal restraint; and

WHEREAS, the Republican Party believes that government must be responsive to the citizens it serves; and

WHEREAS, the average assessed value of an existing residential home increased 21.3 percent from 2004 to 2005, continuing a five-year trend of double-digit increases; and

WHEREAS, real estate tax bills are growing faster than personal income; and

WHEREAS, Alexandrians, individually and through civic and neighborhood associations, have called for restraining growth in spending to no more than three percent in fiscal year 2006 and for development of restraints on growth in real property taxes and spending in subsequent fiscal years; and

WHEREAS, increasing other taxes or creating new taxes to continue profligate spending would not accomplish the goal of Alexandrians in making this call for restraint in taxation and in spending;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Alexandria Republican City Committee joins the call of Alexandria’s citizens for continued fiscal restraint and lower property tax rates this year and in the future. The ARCC supports a real estate tax of no more than $0.84 per $100 of assessed value and no more than three percent growth in spending as a fair and balanced compromise. The ARCC urges the City Council to set the rate at or below this figure.
