Absentee voting in person

If you are eligible to vote absentee (see reasons), you may cast your absentee ballot in person. This option allows you to complete the entire absentee voting process in one visit to the City Elections Office, thus eliminating the risk of mail delay. It is often more convenient than voting by mail for voters who will be in Alexandria at some point in the weeks preceding the election. (Alternatively, you can vote absentee by mail.)

Where
In-person absentee voting is available at one location: the City Elections Office, 132 N. Royal St. in Old Town (see map).

When
This service begins about 45 days before the November election (30 days before a primary or May city election), and ends the Saturday before Election Day. The office is open for absentee voting during normal business hours (Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm), with extended evening hours on some weekdays, and also on some Saturdays.

In-person absentee voting process is usually simpler than voting absentee by mail.

Step #1: Go to the Elections Office and ask for an absentee ballot request form.

Step #2: Complete the request form at the office and submit it. You'll get your absentee ballot (or access to a voting machine) on the spot.

Step #3: Complete the ballot in the office and submit it. You're done!

More information on absentee voting is available from the Alexandria City Elections Office and the Virginia State Board of Elections.
