Registering to vote

Each voter must be registered to vote in the City of Alexandria at least 22 days before the election is held. You may register in person or by mail.

Registration deadlines for 2010
  • For June 8 primary election: Register by Mon., May 17
  • For Nov. 2 general election: Register by Tue., Oct. 12

Registering in person: You may register to vote at any of the following locations in Alexandria:

  • City Elections Office
    Where: 132 N. Royal St. in Old Town (see map)
    When: Mon.-Fri., 8 am - 5 pm
    Phone: 703-746-4050
  • City Hall
    Where: 301 King St. (Room 1900) in Old Town (see map)
    When: Mon.-Fri., 8 am - 5 pm.
  • Virginia Dept. of Motor Vehicles
    Where: 2681 Mill Rd., Eisenhower Valley (see map)
    When: Mon.-Fri., 8 am - 5 pm; Sat., 8 am - 12 noon

Registering by mail: You may submit your Virginia voter registration form by mail if you prefer. Forms are available at many locations in Alexandria:

  • City Hall and many other city offices
  • City library branches
  • Virginia Dept. of Motor Vehicles offices

You may also obtain a registration form:

  • from the City Elections Office (call 703-746-4050 or online)
  • from the Alexandria Republican Party (call 571-969-4467)
  • by downloading the form and printing it.

Within 30 days after registering, you should receive a Voter ID card in the mail from the City, showing your address and your voting precinct and polling place. On Election Day, you will be allowed to vote only at the precinct in which you are registered to vote.

Keep it current: If you have changed your address or your name, you'll need to update your registration information. If you've moved outside Alexandria, submit a new voter registration form to the registrar in your new city or county. If you've moved within Alexandria, you should:

  • use the change-of-information form on the back of your voter ID card; or
  • fill out a new voter registration form; or
  • send the information in writing (including name, old and new address, date of birth, social security number)
Then submit the information to the City Elections Office in person, or by mail (132 N. Royal St., Alexandria 22314) or by fax (703-838.6449). Any change of address must be signed and submitted by the registration deadline.
